Who is a Songwriter?

Music has evolved over the years from being just melodies from musical instruments from musical instruments, vocals and words put together to create a full song. Today’s music has a large variety of components ranging from vocal samples. All of these components contribute to making the final song what it is to the music listener.

That being said, all the original creators of the ideas for each of these components must be credited as contributors. It's impossible to properly categorize each person specifically according to their contribution since new categories of ideas pop up everyday. For example, one could argue that one who plays drums is called a drummer and so if a song contained a cigarette spark sound, that person should maybe be called a ‘sparker’.

Using that system would make a song’s registration process very cumbersome and so to simplify this, every creator of an idea which formed a c component of a song regardless of what it could be categorized as was referred to as a songwriter.

So that includes anyone contributing ideas such as the beatmaker, lyricist, instrument player, etc. That also means that a singer or vocalist who did not write any lyrics nor melody but just simply sang cannot be referred to as a songwriter because they did not create any original ideas.
